About Merithockracy
Merithockracy is a fan-built analytics playground that lets you decide what NHL players should really be paid. No pundits, no algorithms you can't see — just your weights, your curves, your call.
How It Works
Pick the stats you think matter most — goals, Corsi, expected goals, blocked shots, whatever — and assign each one a weight and an impact curve. Merithockracy's Merit Engine normalizes every player's stats across the league, applies your curves, and scales the results so total merit pay equals the real salary cap. The result: a custom “what they should earn” number for every player.
The Three Lists
- Most Valuable — Players with the highest merit salary under your scheme.
- Bargain Hunters — Players whose merit salary exceeds their real cap hit. Hidden gems.
- Anchors — Players whose real salary overshoots their merit value. Cap anchors.
Data Sources
Player rosters and standard statistics come from the public NHL API. Advanced metrics (Corsi, Fenwick, expected goals, etc.) are sourced from MoneyPuck.com. Salary cap figures are sourced from official NHL records. Data covers the salary-cap era from 2005 to 2024.
Open & Free
Merithockracy is free to use. You can experiment anonymously in the Merit Lab without creating an account. Sign in with a social account only when you want to save or share a scheme.
